PORT HARCOURT— FEDERAL Government has been enjoined to come to the aid of 35 communities in Rivers State, threatened by coastal erosion.

Making the appeal in Port Harcourt during a session with his constituents, member representing Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro federal constituency, Mr Dakuku Peterside, said the government should not wait for agitation from the people before it took action.

Dakuku, who is House Committee Chairman on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), said the communities could lose about 40 kilometres strip of land to the erosion if urgent steps were not taken to control it.

He said: “The worst part of it is that sea level is most likely going to rise up to 30 centimetres in the next 20 years if the situation is not addressed. This is authoritative and based on research.”

He said the House of Representatives also recently enjoined government to give urgent attention to problems affecting the communities.
