TEN engineering students of University of Lagos were called last week for LG scholarship scheme. They are Nnaemeka Obiajulu; Willie Francis; Ekwoh Samuel; Odubanjo Rukayalt; Etuere Reuben; Benson Udoh; Folarin Damilare and Adeyemi Oladele Junior, Taiwo Samuel and Owoh Etokowo.

They were awarded with the scholarship for their hard work , diligence and determination in their studies by LG Electronics, with each of them going home with a cheque of $1,500.

The ten scholarship beneficiaries were drawn from 400 and 500 levels in the faculty of engineering of the institution based on their grade points of 4.0 to 5.0 that stood them apart from their contemporaries as best students in the faculty. The initiative, according to LG Electronics is designed as an annual event that would give the beneficiaries opportunity of joining LG Electronics for their industrial attachment for a period of four months.

Also, upon completion of their degree and the compulsory National Youth Service programme, LG said they would be offered paid internship programme and if found worthy in learning and character, would be absolved into the mainstream of the company’s workforce.

Appliances manufacturing firm

The electronic and home appliances manufacturing company said that the award of scholarship to Nigerian students was a demonstration of her believe in the abundant human talents and resources in the country waiting for opportunities to be explored and discovered to better the country through enhanced human capacity development on the platform of education.

Presenting the cheques to the students, Managing Director, LG Electronics, West Africa Operations, Mr. Jeayoung Lee, said that the gesture was in line with the company’s strong belief in education and the potentials of the students to turn the country around.

According to Lee, “for us at LG Electronics, it is our core belief that education is the bed rock of any society. The more qualitative the education of a nation is, the more functional its systems and institutions would be. This can only be achieved through investing in genuine and natural human talents in the educational system.

“This gesture is borne out of the company’s resolve to leave no stone unturned in contributing its quota to the educational development of Nigerian youth who are the leaders of tomorrow. For us in LG, this is the way to go and LG Electronics is fully committed to making this venture a success story that would benefit the society as a whole”.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe expressed gratitude to LG for extending the magnanimity to his students, describing the act as a pace setter in youth empowerment initiatives. “This for me is what I can best describe as the height of responsibility that any responsible organization can show to its public.

This is a practical demonstration of what it means to connect to the aspirations and yearnings of youths and I dare say that LG Electronics has been in the fore front of making things better for the Nigerian educational system’.

The Vice Chancellor also commended LG for the role it played in raising the standard of the faculty by renovating the laboratory and donating over 100 computers.
