VETERANS of the Nigerian Civil War, under the auspices of Civil War Veterans, have described the death of the former Biafran warlord, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu as a colossal loss to the nation.
In a condolence message issued at the end of a crucial meeting of the Civil War Veterans in Ibusa, Delta State, by its Chairman, Vet. John Mozia; Secretary, Vet. Charles Okechukwu; Public Relations Officer, Vet. Polite Chidebe, and the coordinator for Imo and other Eastern states, they said Ikemba Nnewi contributed so much to the socio-economic development of the country.
They regretted that he died at a time his wealth of experience was needed by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration in the task of reshaping the country.
While praying God to grant the family of their late leader, especially his widow, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, the fortitude to bear the loss, they appealed to the Federal Government to ensure that late Odumegwu-Ojukwu, whom they described as an enigma and man of many parts, is immortalised.
The group’s flag at its Ibusa head office, the statement said, will continue to fly at half mast until after Ojukwu’s burial as a mark of honour to their fallen hero.
They assured that its members will participate actively in the burial.
