IBADAN—THE Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, under the aegis of the Synergy League, has faulted the intervention efforts by Governor Abiola Ajimobi on the 26 August flood disaster, saying he foot-dragged in addressing the plight of the victims of the disaster.

But the State Chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in a swift reaction, advised the former Governor of the state, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, to face the charges of corruption against the state.

PDP claimed  that three months after the disaster, Ajimobi had neither taken any meaningful step to alleviate the plight of the  victims  nor rendered an account of the generous donations from the federal and state governments, banks, blue chip corporate bodies, philanthropic and religious organisations  which the group claimed runs into about two billion naira.

The Synergy League said that the state Task Force on Flood Prevention and Management set up by Govenor Ajimobi had painted a horrific picture by disclosing that 2,105 houses were washed away during the flood.

What Governor Ajimobi should have done,  according to the group, was to make the terms of reference of the Task Force holistic to accommodate the prevention of similar disaster in the remaining 22 local government areas that constitute the state

ACN in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Dauda Kolawole, said that the response of the Ajimobi government to the plight of victims of the flood had been documented as one of the fastest and most responsive.

“The state government and local governments had provided relief “beyond the imaginations of the victims” which it said was unprecedented in the history of governmental responses to disaster.”

With the allegation, the party alleged that it was obvious to all and sundry by now that it was either Akala and his former aides did not understand the meaning of playing opposition politics or that both were incapable of mentally accessing the practice of opposition politics.

The ACN said that, unlike the Alao-Akala government which was renowned for on-the-spur-of-the-moment decisions which it attributed to what it called the former governor’s “intellectual hollowness,” the Abiola Ajimobi government, mindful of taking decisions that would last a life time, prefers to explore what it called the foundational and structural make-ups of problems before taking decisions.
