WARRI— THERE was indication, yesterday, that the Federal Govern-ment may intervene in the feud rocking Federal University of Petroleum Resources, FUPRE, Effurun, Delta State, to stop possible breakdown of law and order.

The crisis escalated few days ago following a letter by Minister of Education, recalling the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Alabi, and Registrar, Dr. L. Onwuka, who were ordered to proceed on terminal leave by the Governing Council.

A top official of the Federal Ministry of Education told Vanguard, Thursday: “It appears that the Minister was not given the true picture of things in the university by those who briefed her because she was not supposed to have invalidated a legitimate decision of the Governing Council of FUPRE, without approval from the Visitor, who is President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The Presidency is certainly disturbed by the on-going crisis in the institution. Therefore, the Minister,  management of the school and union leaders, who took the minister to court, may be invited for dialogue on the issue as well as other matters that led to the current impasse.”

Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, FUPRE branch, Dr. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, who spoke to Vanguard on the work-to-rule which entered its fourth day, yesterday, said: “There is no going back on our action as the Minister of Education has not revoked her letter recalling the Vice Chancellor and Registrar from their accumulated leave, as ordered by the Governing Council.”
