Nsukka—A philanthropist and transporter, Evangelist Samuel Onyishi, has donated N50 million to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, for the construction of an ultra modern Institute of African Studies, IAS.
Onyishi, who is the chief executive officer of Peace Mass Transit, Limited, made the donation to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bartho Okolo, during the 2011 scholarship award by his foundation at the IAS yesterday.
The scholarship scheme has 100 beneficiaries across the country.
Onyishi told the Vice Chancellor that the donation was in appreciation of the privilege and honour done to him by the university to endow a N100 million scholarship foundation in the IAS.
He said the donation was a prelude to the public presentation of N50, 000 cheques each to the 100 beneficiaries of the 2011 scholarship scheme designed for indigent and disabled students across the country.
Responding, Prof Okolo expressed gratitude to Onyishi for his magnanimity noting that even in 1998 while the donor was a student, he single-handedly built an administrative office block for the university.
In his brief remark at the public presentation of cheques to the 2011 awardees later, Evang. Onyishi said that the 100 awardees owed him no gratitude adding that his gesture was in fulfillment of his covenant with God.
