THE Progressive Peoples Alliance has espressed concern at the rising spate of kidnaping in the South East, calling on President Umaru Yar’Adua to arrest the situation by extending the amnesty offered militants in the South South to the South East.
In a statement, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Ben Onyechere lamented that “the young men have taken their destiny in their hands by launching an all-out attack on the social order through the unmitigated rate of violent crimes in the South East, unprecedented in the annals of history and the culture of this area.
“It has become worrisome and therefore crucial for the President to extend the same measure of amnesty to the South East, which not only produces oil but also has not experienced any form of special intervention by the Federal Government since the civil war, irrespective of the pronouncements made towards rehabilitation, reconstruction and reconciliation of the South East, which bore the heavy brunt in the aftermath of the civil war which is why the standard of living in this area is very deplorable, giving rise to the violent crimes.â€
The PPA scribe argued that the South East deserves a special attention by the Federal Government because of the perennial hangover of the civil war.
