BENIN-Police in Edo State, Thursday, paraded a robbery suspect (names with-held), who fell into a well while trying to escape after robbing innocent people in Iguosa community in Ovia Local Government Area of the state.
The police also arrested three persons, including a driver to the state House of Assembly member for conspiracy and stealing a Toyota Camry car and N1.3 million, belonging to the legislator. Mr. Jude Idehen.
The driver allegedly conspired with two other persons (names withheld) and another person at large (names withheld) to steal the car and the money from the lawmaker’s house in Benin.
While parading the suspects before newsmen, Edo State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammed Hurdi, said policemen saddled with the task of draining the well after getting Akpan out, recovered assorted weapons at the bottom of the well.
Hurdi said: “On November 2, the suspect terrorised Iguosa community but fell into a well while escaping. A distress call was made to the police and on arrival, he was actually met in a well from where he was apprehended and several items recovered from him.”
Items recovered from the suspect, who denied being a robber, included one cut-to-size gun, a live cartridge and three handsets.
The suspect, however, told newsmen that he was arrested over a quarrel he had with a girlfriend, “who said she was no longer going to be my friend.
“I went to my former girlfriend’s place to retrieve the handsets I bought for her because she said she was stopping our relationship. I am not a robber.”
