Abuja — Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, has said the decision on whether or not electronic voting would be used for the 2015 elections would be determined by Nigerians.
Prof. Jega spoke yesterday when he met with members of the House Committee on Electoral Matter.
He said: ”Whatever we will do depends on what Nigerians want. We need additional card readers that can be used for electronic voting. We can start piloting electronic voting machines on pilot basis to know if we will be able to use that in 2015.”
Jega, who told the lawmakers that although the 2011 elections were not perfect, said the commission was pleased that it was able to raise the bar in the conduct of elections, adding, however, that “there is room for improvement.”
Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Jerry Manwe, said the House was determined to enhance the electoral process.
He sought more funds for INEC, adding that “INEC must be funded on time to enable it conduct credible elections in 201.”
