Workers urge Chime to order Ugwu’s release

BY VICTOR AHIUMA-YOUNG

LEADERS of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees, AUPCTRE, Tuesday called on Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, to reconsider his stance on the agitation for the implementation of the minimum wage and order the release of Chairman of Workers’ Forum, Comrade Osmond Ugwu and drop the attempted murder charge against him.

AUPCTRE leaders lamented that Comrade Ugwu had been in detention since his arrest close to two weeks ago at a workers’ rally.

In a statement, the union’s Acting General Secretary, Comrade Philip Agbonkonkon, said: “The serial agitations in virtually all states of the federation for the implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act 2011 have again brought to light the weak industrial relations in the public services which has also stifled meaningful collective bargaining.

“In the circumstance, we call on the Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, to reconsider his stance on the agitation for the implementation of the minimum wage and order the release of Comrade Osmond Ugwu and drop the charge against him.”
