Court restrains Army over Oghede community invasion

By SIMON EBEGBULEM
BENIN CITY— A Benin High Court  has granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the Commander 322 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army and three others from further invasion, demolition of buildings or forceful possession of lands belonging to Oghede community of Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Members of the community led by the Enogie (Duke) of Oghede, HRH Osadebamwen Aghahowa, had been at logger-heads with the Army authorities in their domain, after they accused the Army of forceful possession of their lands and alleged destruction of houses of members of the community built on the land by the Army.

Following persistent clashes between the youths of the community and the Army, the community decided to drag the Army Authorities to court.

The injunction granted by Justice A.N.Ehigiamusoe, restrained the Army from further “ demolishing or continuing to demolish buildings belonging to the Applicants or members of Oghede community.”
