THE quest for massive in vestments in infrastructure facilities may receive a boost with plans to invest part of the N2.4 trillion Pensions in the sector.
Acting Director-General of the National Pension Commission, PenCom, Mr. Manzuma Maman said in Abuja, that roads and rails were part of the sectors in which the pension fund would be invested.
According to him, “We have a couple of areas of investment that we are looking at. Part of that consideration is investment in infrastructure. Roads and trails are part of the infrastructure we are looking into.”
Mr. Maman noted that the funds which investment windows focused largely in government securities could also be invested abroad.
He explained, however, that a definite decision was yet to be reached in that regard.
The Acting D-G said safety of investment was the most important determinant in the decision of the investment windows.
He said “for us at PENCOM, the most important thing is safety of investment. Returns is important but safety is the key.”
Mr. Maman said directors of the Pension Fund Administrators, PFAs, must provide suitable policies and ensure appropriate implementation of such policies as the commission would not condone any breach to its guidelines that could jeopardise the stability of the industry.
He noted that where any board was found wanting, PenCom would wield the big stick which could lead to the removal of such a board.
