ONITSHA—Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Anambra State branch, Wednesday called on the Federal Government to rescind its planned withdrawal of fuel subsidy.

President of the union, Mr Jerry Nnubia, made the appeal while briefing reporters on the stance of NULGE on the controversial issue.

Nnubia said it was preposterous for the presidency to contemplate withdrawing subsidy on petroleum products when necessary infrastructures had not been put in place.

Reasoning that the withdrawal of the subsidy would create untold hardship for the workers who were currently grappling with the implementation of the new minimum wage in their respective states, he advised the Federal Government to cut down certain expenses that do not benefit the citizenry.

Nnubia suggested that rather than withdraw fuel subsidy, existing oil refineries in the country should be revived to ensure that fuel was no longer imported.

” The federal government has no reason to import fuel when we have refineries in the country. The federal government should put in place infrastructures like good road network, good schools,social welfare schemes among others,” he said.

He said the federal government’s plan to withdraw fuel subsidy would rubbish the aim of the new minimum wage approved for workers by Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
