Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria, ICEN, has urged the Federal Government to intervene in the on-going crisis at the Delta Steel Company, DSC, where some Indians are on hunger strike over non-payment of their salaries and other entitlements in the last three months.

South-South Coordinator of ICEN, Mr. Friday Udoh, in a statement in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, yesterday, said that ICEN was worried over the dimension the issue was taking, urging government to ratify the situation because of “its diplomatic implications’’ on the country.

He said: “The lingering crisis at DSC cannot be left entirely to the Indians considering the economic, social and diplomatic implications, hence the Federal Government’s intervention is necessary.

“The Indian workers deserve government’s protection in accordance with international conventions on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and their families.

“This convention emphasises the connection between migration and human rights, which is increasingly becoming a crucial topic as well as foreign policy instruments globally, in protecting migrant workers and members of their families.”
