Yenagoa-Bayelsa State Government has commenced preparation for a post-oil economy as Governor Timipre Sylva, Wednesday, swore-in Mrs. Timi Agara as Special Adviser on Renewable Energy.
Sylva charged Mrs. Agara to fashion out ways to shift the economy of the state from its current dependence on oil.
He said: “For now, Bayelsa is totally dependent on oil which is a non-renewable source of energy. We must begin to look inwards and re-position ourselves for the new challenge.”
The governor said it had become imperative to begin the exploration of alternative source of energy.
He said it was this same thinking that informed government’s decision to invest in agriculture with a view to making it the mainstay of the state’s economy.
He charged Mrs Agara, whom he described as a “round peg in a round hole,” to take her work seriously as so much will depend on the quality of advice she gives. He said she cannot afford to fail because the government and people of the state expect much from her.
