Security now number one priority on national agenda – Minister

Abuja – Ms Olajumoke Akinjide, the Minister of State for FCT, said on Tuesday that the security of lives and property was now the number one priority on the national agenda of Federal Government.

Akinjide said this in Abuja after she was conducted round the UN building, which was bombed by suspected Boko Haram sec members on Aug. 26.

She said the FCT Administration was working in partnership with other agencies, embassies and high commissions to protect the lives of diplomats.

“We in the FCT are working as the host, with all the agencies, embassies, high commissions and multi-laterals institution in Nigeria to ensure that everybody is protected,” she said.

Akinjide said that the issue of security would not be handled lightly by the government and all the security agencies.

“Security is something we are doing in partnership with the Federal Government and all the security agencies; you can be rest assured that security is not something that we are taking lightly,” she added.

The minister said that the government was committed to rebuilding the UN building and getting the UN workers back to work as soon as possible.

Earlier, Ms Helen Clark, the Chair of the UN Development Group, had said that the UN would partner with Nigeria to re-evaluate the grants on security to the country.

She said that the Nigerian government had been very supportive of the UN since the attack on its building.

“The government of Nigeria has been absolutely tremendous in the support it has given the UN,” Clark said.

She said that the objective of her visit to Nigeria was to console the staff and families that were affected in the attack and also engage with national authorities on the reinforcement of the staff and the UN programmes in the country.

Clark added that the UN staff would come back to the building and continue with their good work to support the government and people of Nigeria. (NAN)
