OSOGBO- Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola has described the arraignment of National Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu before the Code of Conduct Tribunal as political harassment and a threat to the nation’s democracy.
In a statement by the Assistant Director Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Fayemiwo, the governor frowned at the action of security agents who allegedly violated the constitutional rights of supporters who tried to come into Abuja and the court to express solidarity with Tinubu.
He described Tinubu as an innocent and law abiding man whose opponents found very difficult to handle in their search for political power, warning that those who orchestrated the trial merely wanted to score political points with it.
The governor expressed confidence that the former Lagos State governor would emerge victorious from the present trial as he vouched for his innocence and uprightness both in and out of public office.
Also, a second republic Senator, Olorunibe Farunkanmi, yesterday said that the trial of the former Lagos Governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is meant to persecute political opposition groups in the Country.
Farunkanmi argued that it was ill timed, politically motivated and would heat up the polity.
The Senator who is a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria ACN in Ondo State stated this in a statement in Akure.
He said: “It is obvious to every Nigerian that the PDP controlled Federal Government is pushing the Code of Conduct Bureau to harass Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for his boldness in leading the ACN to regain Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states from the PDP.”
According to him, over 15 governors including Jonathan Goodluck who was then the governor of Balyesa state and Tinubu were listed for investigation in 2006.
“But nothing was heard about Goodluck Jonathan who now is the President of Nigeria, but Bola Tinubu who left government about five years ago who had worked for many years in the Oil industry and had lived and had many business ventures particularly when he was forced to relocate abroad during the NADECO years,” he said.
