Customs arrest Chadian with nine tusks

Badagry – (NAN) The Seme Border Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it has arrested a Chadian who imported nine elephant tusks into the country.

Alhaji Sadiq Sahabi, Area Comptroller of the command, told reporters on Wednesday in Badagry that the suspect would soon be handed over to relevant government agencies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that elephant tusk is prohibited for trading by the United Nations and Nigeria is a signatory to the international treaty.

According to Sadiq, the suspect was arrested by a team of customs men on patrol along Lagos-Badagry expressway.

The Area Comptroller said that the preliminary investigation was being carried out to determine the monetary value of the nine tusks and where the tusks were bought.

He said that full scale investigation into the motive for importing the tusks would be done by  the relevant government agencies.

Sadiq said that the driver of the passenger vehicle, who was arrested with the suspect, had been granted bail after he established his innocence.
