Striking Lagos Water Corporation workers shut water works

By VICTOR AHIUMA-YOUNG
LAGOS- Workers of Lagos State Water Corporation, LSWC, Tuesday, embarked on strike over poor conditions of service and alleged refusal by management to improve their welfare.

The workers accused management of the corporation of foot-dragging over a condition of service proposal submitted to it by their umbrella body, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, AUPCTRE, Lagos State Chapter, three years ago.

Acting General Secretary of the union, Mr Phillip Agbonkonkon, said Ijora water works had been shut.

He warned that if by tomorrow the management was still adamant, all the Water Works in the state would be shut.

He said: “We can no longer tolerate a situation where a proposal for condition of service that was submitted to management three years ago, will remain unattended to and the workers left to suffer. Most water works, including Ijora have been shut. By Thursday, all the water works will be shut and before Friday all the taps would have dried up. If such situation arises, the people know who to be held responsible.”
