ASUP strike grounds activities in Federal Poly

THE five-day warning strike by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, which has entered its third day, has brought to a stand still activities in Federal Polytechnic Oko .

The five-day warning strike which began on Monday is to end on Friday, while negotiation with the institute’s management has started since Monday with the Rector, Prof. Godwin Onu, presiding over the meetings that is expected to appraise the developments.

Chairman of ASUP Oko Chapter, Dr. Onyeka Uwakwe, told Vanguard that the management and union have been meeting to resolve the matter. The warning strike which came just when students were preparing for their 2nd semester examination, was described by a student who pleaded anonymity as “a strike without the interest of students at heart because majority of us are in our injury time.”

However, students of the polytechnic were seen carrying travelling bags at the Ekwulobia park, Anambra state. Vanguard’s  visit to the hostels in the poly revealed that a large number of students have vacated the campus.

Meanwhile, the congress will be meeting to reassess developments and the Management is still holding serious meetings so as to ensure that the 5-days warning strike is quickly called off and activities in the institute resume immediately.
