One dead as angry traders attack council officials

IBADAN—A motor bike operator, identified as Musibau, was crushed by a trailer while two passengers he was carrying were injured in a pandemonium created when some angry traders at the Mobil Filling Station, Ring Road Wednesday attacked policemen and a newsman, Mr. Gbenga Adesuyi, during a fracas between traders and officials of the South West Local Government Area in Ibadan.

Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Femi Okanlawon however said the death of the man led to the fracas.

Vanguard gathered that the officials of the local government had attempted to pull down the stalls erected by the road side but the traders resisted and this led to stampede in the area.

The officials of the council were said to have embarked on beautification of the council area and were trying to remove some illegal structures by the road side which the traders resisted.

In the process, the deceased was said to have been stopped by the police and the officials when the trailer coming towards them ran into them and killed the rider on the spot.

The reporter had tried to capture the melee when the angry traders who saw him as one of the government officials pounced on him.

The driver of the trailer with number plate, Kano XA428ABS was rescued by the police from being attacked.
