Trailer crushes one, injures 2 in C/River

By Johnbosco Agbakwuru

Calabar-One person was feared dead while two others were severely injured, yesterday, when a trailer loaded with cement skidded off the road and crashed at a major roundabout on the outskirt of Calabar, Cross River State.

The vehicle, according to an eyewitness, was heading out of the city when the incident occurred. The eyewitness said the trailer driver died in the accident. It was learnt that the driver had tried to negotiate the roundabout, but lost control because the road was too steep for the truck to maintain a balance. The driver’s cabin was totally crushed. The injured two were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The eyewitness said: “Similar incident involving heavy duty vehicles trying to negotiate this roundabout have occurred several times since the roundabout was constructed few months ago and this has destroyed property worth millions of naira.”

Some heavy duty vehicle drivers blamed the accidents on the steep incline of the roundabout. They called on the government to order the contractor back to site to reconstruct the road to avoid further accidents.
