Osogbo — Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State yesterday said among other benefits, the establishment of a Salaries and Wages Commission by his government will boost morale of workers in the state.

He said the commission was the only mechanism for adequate and befitting remuneration of workers, saying the concept of a commission to deal with remuneration of workers came to him out of the desire to ensure their take-home pay actually are enough not only to take them home but to lift them up economically and socially.

Speaking through the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy in his office, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the governor said the leadership of the workers in Osun should educate their members on the benefits of the commission.

He said, “We did not just come up with the idea of Salaries and Wages Commission. It is a mechanism that has been tested and has worked well elsewhere.”

The situation in Lagos State is such that even before the Federal Government came up with the Minimum Wage Law and pegged it at N18,000, Lagos State had implemented N17,500 as minimum wage for its workers. Lagos State was able to do that simply because it had put in place a mechanism for measuring workers’ pay vis-à-vis the incomes of the state.

“So, with such a commission in place in Osun, there will be representatives of the workers; those of the government and independent consultants and this body will ensure that wages are fixed according to certain parameters all aimed at ensure adequate remuneration for the workers.”
