LIBREVILLE:  (AFP) – Gabon president Ali Bongo Ondimba insisted on Thursday that his country will be able to co-host the 2012 African Cup of Nations despite doubts over the readiness of some venues.

Gabon is co-hosting the tournament with Equatorial Guinea and Ondimba, accompanied by Cameroon football star Samuel Eto’o on a tour of the sites, said the January showpiece is not in danger.

“What us important and what everybody must understand is that the African Cup of Nations will take place,” said the president.

He added that the main Amity Stadium, being built by the Chinese, will be ready to stage the opening of the three-week tournament.

“The work is progressing. You know that I am an impatient man and I’d like it all to be finished,” added Ondimba.
