LAGOS — National Council of Managing DirectorS of Licensed Customs Agents, NCMDLCA, has faulted the process leading to the concession of terminals at the nation’s seaports, which had resulted in high charges and tariffs imposed on importers by the private terminal operators.

In a petition to Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Mallam Omar Suleiman, National President of NCMDLCA, Mr. Lucky Amiwero, said the exercise left importers to their while the NPA was  left with no  clear role at the ports.

NCMDLCA noted that the absence of “government agencies responsible for fixing/regulating tariff/local shipping charges. Port concession/privatisation is supposed to reduce cost, improve efficiency of operation and management of port, eliminate congestion and facilitate the emergence of Nigeria as the hub for West African sub-region, but the reverse is the case.”

The council pointed out that there was no law regulating or controlling the operations of shipping companies, who have a long history of disobeying laws by indiscriminately increasing and imposing charges in the country.
