LAGOS: The Organised Private Sector,(OPS) , weekend, tabled key areas they want the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr.Olusegun Aganga, to work on so that they can deliver N15 trillion of the N35 trillion total investment targeted annually for infrastructure development.
It will be recalled that in the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan, the private sector is to contribute 43 percent or N15 trillion of the total investment required, the States and Local Governments 26 percent and the Federal Government contributing the balance of 31 percent.
At Aganga’s maiden meeting with the business community in Lagos which attracted more than 500 OPS chiefs, they told Aganga:”If you don’t want to go round the circles like the previous Ministers in the Commerce and Industry Ministry the country has had in the last twenty years, then, you should work on the following areas: “The Customs .
The Customs should be facilitator of trade and investment and not revenue collector. Roll out incentives for industries and these should be sector- specific and not individual-specific.
Multinational companies in the country should be compelled to export certain percentage of Made-In -Nigerian goods, and no sudden change in industrial policy for at least ten years; and even if there is little pain and protest government should not bend the policy.”
They also demanded that Interest Rate should be lowered to single digit to encourage investments and
Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s led NEMT(National Economic Management Team) action plans for job creation should be implemented.
