UGHELLI— FOUR corporate organisations and over 90 people were, weekend, convicted by a mobile court sitting in Ughelli and Asaba, Delta State, for contravening the state environmental laws and other related offenses.

Our reporter, who also monitored the monthly sanitation exercise noted that there was strict compliance with the restriction of movement as most roads were closed to traffic, while only those on essential duties moved freely.

Convicted were organisations, which included a major  transport company in the state and three petrol stations and individuals (names witheld) who were found guilty by a Chief Magistrate sitting in Ughelli, Mr. Ena Odjugo. The culprits paid fines ranging from N3,000 to N10,000.

It was the same thing in Asaba. Mr Odjugo who presided over a mobile court setup by the state Environmental Taskforce in the area, reiterated that the culprits violated the laws guiding the state monthly environmental exercise.

Some others arrested for violating the environmental law were made to do some cleaning before they were released.
Noting that the sanctions were aimed at ensuring strict compliance with the environmental laws, he warned the people of the area against non compliance with the state environmental law.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the exercise, the Director of Personnel Management, DPM in the council, Mr. Emmanuel Erhisere, said the council was committed to the overall cleanliness of the area, adding that the council was embarking on evacuation of debris and demolition of all illegal structures erected on natural waterways in line on the state government’s directive.
