LAGOS— THE Lagos State Government, yesterday, called on the Federal Government to fix the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, which is now a nightmare to residents, motorists and other road users.

Last night, motorists and commuters were held up on the road for hours due to potholes, which are gradually breaking the road into two at Iyana-Itire and Berliet area, among many other bad stops.

The state government said the call became necessary because the deplorable condition of the road has become a drain on the economy of the state  and the nation in general.

State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba, who made the call in a chat with Vanguard, said the nation’s economy was losing millions of naira, as  several man-hours were daily lost in traffic occasioned by craters on the road.

Ibirogba noted that while the state government had  managed the traffic challenges, total reconstruction of the failed road was the only way out of the problem.

He said: “It is not only Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, check through Lagos and you will see that most of the federal roads are in terrible state of disrepair including Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.”

“The last time we had serious rain in the state, the road almost  caved in. I think there is the need for the Federal Government to urgently intervene.  Many Nigerians are living here. I am appealing to the Federal Government to come to the aid of over 18 million Nigerians living in this state,” Ibirogba said.
