Cop runs amock, kills colleague

BY ANAYO OKOLI
Umuahia — A police corporal attached to Governor Theodore of Abia State, yesterday, ran amock, shot and killed his colleague in Umuahia, the state capital.

The policemen lived on Okpara Avenue, near the house of the Police Commissioner.

The assailant, identified as Corporal Mohammed Umoru, was said to have woken up at about 2 a.m. and started shooting, killing his colleague, Corporal Clement Amachi, in the process

Abia State Police Commissioner, Mr. Bala Hassan, who confirmed the incident, in a telephone interview, described it as unfortunate.

According to Hassan, the incident happened near his House, not Government House.

Hassan said the slain policeman shared the same Boys’ Quarters with his suspected assailant.
He explained that because he was in mufti, the other policemen in the quarters did not know he was a police man.

The commissioner said when the assailant shot the corporal, he started moving down towards the end of the street and was pursued and disarmed.

On whether Corporal Umoru had mental problem, Hassan said “he is still receiving treatment in a hospital; if he survives, we’ll check if he has any mental problem.”

The two police corporals were members of the security details attached to the convoy of Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, and  sit in the same vehicle.

Umoru shared the same Pilot vehicle  in the governor’s convoy with his late colleague, Corporal Clement Amachi, said to hail from Ohanku, Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State.

When newsmen visited the hospital where Mohammed is receiving treatment, the doctor in-charge, Uche Aguocha, said he was being operated upon.

Dr. Aguocha explained that the dead policeman was shot at close range, adding that Umoru was brought to the hospital in coma but was revived by the medical team because the bullet used in shooting him was a light one meant to disarm him.
He said Mohammed was shot in the chest and back in the process of being disarmed.
