WARRI – OVER 50  persons have been rendered homeless in Owanta Community,  Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, following a flood that swept through the town, weekend.

Property worth millions of naira, including five residential buildings, two vehicles and other household items were washed away by the flood, which was caused by persistent down pour for days.

Some of the victims,  who recounted their ordeals,  said they were jolted from their sleep in the night by flood, which hit and pulled their buildings.

They appealed to the Delta State Government to come to their aid to enable them continue with their lives, adding that the disaster affected schools in the community.

They also appealed to the Delta State Emergency Relief Management Agency to quickly come to the aid of the displaced persons.

It was gathered that the poor construction of the drainage system on the Abraka Road  contributed to the flood.

An indigene of the community, Mr Williams Agholor,  appealed to the state government to order the contractor to go back to site and construct a durable drainage system.

He described the plight of the victims as pathetic, considering the fact that the displaced persons lost all their personal belongings and had no place to lay their heads at the moment. According to him, “the permanent solution to the erosion problem is for the government to construct drainage from Uboh Street through Abraka Road to the river.”
