OWERRI – More than 5,700 patients received free medical treatment at Aboh Mbaise General Hospital courtesy of a non-governmental organisation, Mbaise USA Medical Mission.

In a similar development, scores of patients received free medical treatment at Mission Hospital, Ngugo, when the management of Holy Rosary Hospital, Emekuku, owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, took medicare to the rural community.

The medical team from the United States of America, USA, comprised 40 medical doctors, led by the Medical Director, Dr. Evelyn Chiapko, and her assistant, Dr. Adanze Ngozi Aguwa, three pharmacists, four nursing officers and five others in charge of logistics.

Speaking to journalists, President of the organisation, Mr. Collins Olorondu, said they treated various ailments, ranging from malaria, ophthalmic problems, dental to ear surgeries, while a patient with facial tumour was referred to the USA for further assessment and treatment.

Olorondu said: “Our aim is not the number of people we will eventually treat, but on restoring hope in some patients with very delicate cases.”
