Inter-religious Council condemns Boko Haram

By Peter Okutu

ABAKALIKI – Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, South-East zone, weekend, condemned the recent bomb attacks in different parts of the country, especially last Thursday’s explosion in the premises of Nigeria Police Headquarters, Abuja, which led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

The group, which is a composition of both Christian and Islamic leaders, criticised the Boko Haram group for engaging in violent attacks on innocent citizens of the country, rather than follow the path of dialogue in presenting their demands.

In a communiqué by Bishop Benson Onyeibor and Shiek Harouna Aja in Abakaliki, NIREC condemned in strong terms the unusual bombings across the nation, especially the threat of Boko Haram.

It read: “We, therefore, call on our security agencies to be more proactive on intelligence gathering. Our Immigration Service should also be re-organised to avoid the infiltration of foreigners who may be involved in this dastardly act.

“We also call on all our political leaders and politicians to desist from overheating the polity or sponsoring all forms of violence. We advise all adherents of both religions to embrace peace, tolerance and love which are key tenets of both religions.

“The South-East zonal council of NIREC wishes to congratulate Mr. President, Vice President, all elected governors and other elected officials on their election and inauguration.”
