Obi assures on N18,000 minimum wage

BY Vincent Ujumadu
AWKA— GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State has promised to implement the N18,000 minimum wage, saying no governor worth his onions would deny workers the wage approved for all government workers in the country.

Addressing teachers from various educational zones, who embarked on tour of executed and on-going projects in the state, Obi said governors were committed to the minimum wage, adding that modalities were being worked out to enable his administration imple-ment it.

The governor, however, insisted that his admini-stration would insist on satisfying all categories of workers.
He added that his resolve was to do what was right, even if it made him unpopu-lar to some people, and noted that “what matters is that we are, by so doing, building a better future for our children.

“To me, if a medical doctor working for government can demand for N240,000 as monthly salary, there is no reason that of a teacher should not increase in a commensurate manner.”

He urged the teachers to exercise patience and be ready to make sacrifices for the good of the state, saying he was determined to right the wrongs of the past.

Obi said despite the lean resources of the state, he had touched every sector without having to borrow money, and attributed it to prudent management of resources and his willingness to cut the cost of governance.

According to him, the giant strides recorded in the education sector, which included the provision of buses to 100 secondary schools, building of 4, 000 classrooms, provision of laptops to 10, 000 schools, provision of computers to schools, construction of boreholes in schools, connection of 120 schools to the internet, provision of Microsoft Academy to 120 schools would not have been possible without the support of the teachers.

Some of the teachers who spoke during an interaction with the governor, expressed surprise at the level infrastructure put in place in various parts of the state and resolved to support the administration in its efforts to re-engineer the state.
