We didn’t maltreat Mrs Akpan – UBTH CMD

BY SIMON EBEGBULEM

BENIN – THE Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Prof. Michael Ibadin, yesterday, described as mischievous and misleading, allegation by a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Augustine Akpan, that the authorities of the hospital maltreated Mrs.
Akpan after she lost her set of twins in the hospital.

It will be recalled that Saturday Vanguard had carried the story,  in which Mr. and Mrs. Akpan, through their lawyer, narrated their ordeal in the hands of the authorities of the hospital due to their inability to pay the  hospital bills  after they alleged that the hospital bill was highly inflated.

However, Prof Ibadin, who spoke to newsmen in Benin City, yesterday, regretted that the patient could be “telling such falsehood” even after the hospital battled to save her life despite the fact that the husband did not “deposit a dime” before the hospital commenced treatment on her.

According to him, “first of all, this woman was brought from a traditional birth attendant clinic. They have been married for over ten years with no child. For the period she was pregnant, she did not register here. You also found out that she did not register anywhere else. So,  though she was carrying a set of twins, that was not known to the doctors or anybody else.”
