Nigerians urged to imbibe spirit of selfless service

BY BESTMANN JOSEPH
LAGOS— Nigerians have been advised to shun avarice, corruption and imbibe the spirit of selfless service to the nation rather than self in order to make Nigeria attain greatness to the pride of the present and future generations.

Speakers at a seminar on ‘’National Unity, Peace and Progress Through Service,’’ organised by the Lagos Zone of the AMORC, Rosicrucian Order, at the Golden Gate Restaurant, Ikoyi, Lagos, weekend, noted that self-aggradisement has caused monumental damage to the nation’s unity, peace, development and progress since independence.

Dr. Douglas Anele, a senior lecturer of Philosophy at the University of Lagos, who spoke on ‘’The Individual in Peace and Unity Through Service,’’ noted that members of the ruling elite in Nigeria operate mostly in the ‘’self-alone’’  mode, while corruption and abuse of power reign supreme, and advocated for ‘’a moral revolution anchored on categorical imperative of selfless service to humanity.’’

Speaking on ‘’Corporate Nigeria and National Progress Through Service,’’ Otunba Francis Meshioye, Executive Director, JMG Ltd, stressed that ‘’Socio-economic development responsibilities should not be left to the government alone. Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS), is a selfless service to the nation, relieving the government  understandable heavy burden,’’ he said.

However, Fr. Johnson Ikube, Chairman/CEO, FNL Plc, who spoke on ‘’The National Centre in Progress Through Service’’, charged those in leadership positions including the President, governors and other elected public officers  to drive the nation’s progress through selfless service by ‘’ crafting a unifying National Guiding Philosophy and Vision, lift the citizenry from religion to spirituality, and a programme for service culture, among others.’’

Among those at the event were Dr. Kenneth Idiodi, Grand Administrator and President of AMORC in Nigeria; Professor Isaac O. Alaba and Fr. Raphael Obiduba.
