Nigeria coach, Samson Siasia, has said that his team were far from prepared to defend the WAFU Nations Cup.

The Super Eagles ‘B’ team were upstaged 3-2 by Togo in the final of the sub-regional WAFU Cup at the weekend.
“If we base our performance in this competition on honesty and facts, I think we were not prepared for this competition,” Siasia said.

“We need time to knock these boys into the desired level. We did not prepare for this competition and we still played in the final. That to me is commendable even though the boys had their off day on Saturday and couldn’t perform up to expectation.

“We will go back and assess the tournament properly and make corrections. The home lads are vital in our rebuilding exercise and we  will  do  everything  tomake sure the Eagles are a team to reckon with in Africa.”

He added: “Despite the flaws in Saturday’s game, we have learnt a lot of lessons that will be good for our rebuilding process. At least we have seen couple of good players in the team who we could give another chance to prove themselves.

“But without making any excuses, Togo played well and were tactically better. They deserved to win the competition.”

Togo coach, Tchanile Tchakala, disclosed that his team outran Nigeria, who also underrated his team.
“I watched their match against Ghana and capitalised on the lapses of the team which is speed. So, I fielded very fit and pacy attackers and midfielders which paid off,” Tchakala said  shortly after the match.

“They also had underrated my team since they thought they had defeated the strongest team in the tournament, Ghana, but they paid dearly for this.”
