Swimmers leave for Senegal without govt support

The apathy against other sports is daily manifesting even as Nigeria prepares for the for the All Africa Games and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Seven swimmers will leave for Senegal next week to compete in the CANA Zone Two  swimming championships that start on May 19  lasting  till 23. They will be representing Nigeria in the West and Cental Africa event but they will be on their own, without support from the Sports Ministry.

“We are financing ourselves. The federation told us yesterday that Sports Ministry is not supporting us. They haven’t given us one kobo.  We are tasking ourselves for the trip,”a federation source told us last night.

“We have seven swimmers and some officials and it is Nigeria’s flag that we will be flying,” lamented a member of the Nigeria Swimming Federation.

Olatokunbo Thomas, a swimming buff  lamented the neglect of other sports  in the country.
