Protests in Delta: Police warn trouble makers

By Emma Amaize

WARRI – DELTA State Police Command, weekend, warned those planning to cause trouble in the state as a result of their dissatisfaction with the outcome of the April 26, governorship poll,  that any act of lawlessness would be visited with the full weight of the law.

Spokesman of the Command, Mr. Charles Muka in a statement said, “Delta State Police Command wish to state that no permit has been granted to anybody or group to go on any form of procession in the state. The command, therefore, warns that any person(s) or group caught will be dealt with.

“However, aggrieved persons as a result of the outcome of the just concluded elections are advised to exploit constitutional means to resolve such disagreement,” he said.

Further he said, “the command, therefore, warns trouble makers not to test its resolve in maintaining law and order in this regard, as every form of lawlessness will be visited with the full weight of the law.”

Moments after Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan was declared winner of the April 26 governorship poll, last Thursday, by the Returning Officer, Prof Richard Anao, Democratic Peoples Party, DPP members, took over the streets of Asaba in protest.

As the news of Uduaghan’s victory spread, there were protests in Ughelli and Warri, just as pro-Uduaghan supporters also celebrated with drums.  However, on Saturday, Urhobo women, staged a protest, carrying mock coffins of Uduaghan and his deputy, Prof Amos Utuama, denouncing their victory in the April 26 poll. The women called for justice.

In the demonstrations so far, the police did not intervene,  but with the new stand, it appeared that the command was no longer prepared to take chances.
