Kalmai (Gombe State) –  A former lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Yola, Dr Keftin Amuga, has advocated the use of the electronic voting system in subsequent elections.

Amuga made the call on Thursday in Kalmai, Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State.

“I am strongly suggesting that the electronic voting approach, which Nigerians kicked against in the past, be given a trial in subsequent elections.

“My thinking and calculation is that the system might clear some of the remaining problems, especially with regard to rigging.”

He said the successful adoption of computerised voter registration by INEC was an indication that the computerised voting system could work.

“The last two elections still highlighted the recurring problem of rigging, although at a minimal level compared with what obtained in the past.

“The success of the computerised voter registration adopted during the last voter registration exercise means that a similar system can work in the conduct of the election proper.”

Amuga, a member of the ruling PDP before he defected to the Labour Party, commended the involvement of NYSC members in the electoral process, saying that they helped to minimise electoral irregularities.

“The NYSC members gave some professional election riggers real tough time. They insisted on doing what they were instructed to do at the polling units. That probably explained why some of them were victims of the election violence.

“They can as well be engaged if the electronic voting system is applied and with their educational background, handling the computer may not be a serious hindrance.”

The former lecturer lauded Nigerians for returning President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the PDP presidential flag bearer had performed well.

The regular supply of fuel by the Jonathan administration was a good development for the citizenry, he said, adding: “Everybody knows the spiral effect of fuel scarcity, especially those of us in the North.

“Taking care of that problem alone is something worthy of appreciation and a cause for one to wish that Goodluck Jonathan continues as the president of this country.” (NAN)
