The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has shifted the date of examination for some subjects in the May/June 2011 WASSCE because it clashed with the governorship election re-scheduled to hold on Tuesday, April 26, 2011.
Registrar of WAEC, Alhaja (Mrs) Mulicat Bello, disclosed this in Lagos, in a press briefing at the end of the 51st Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC), which is the highest decision-making organ of the council on examinations in Nigeria.
She said that, according to the time table, on the 26th April, 2011, there will be Agricultural Science (Practical), Metal Work (Practical) and General Agriculture.
While General Agricu-lture is for Ghana, which can still go on, the other two subjects are taken across all the countries which are members of WAEC.
“Except General Agric-ulture, for the other two, we are trying to strike a balance between the interest of the child and the examination. We’ve held consultations with the Federal Minister of Education. WAEC has decided to look at the child so as not to be disadvantaged. There are arrangements to move the papers not to clash because Nigeria is an important key member of WAEC.”
Bello said that council will announce new date for the examination in respect of these subjects.
“Now, we are holding consultation with other countries subscribing to the examination, and will make a formal date across the member countries.”
On WAEC’s plan for the next day which is 27th April in which there will be examination in Mathematics, she said that WAEC has been in this business of conducting examinations for 59 years.
“We have our own strategy laid out. Mathematics will be written on the day scheduled for the examination.”
