Bayelsa State government dismissed yesterday as false claim of insecurity in the state by the opposition parties and assured law abiding people of their safety during and after election in the state.

The opposition parties in the state led by the Labour Party had Thursday through the Chairman, Comrade Bobo Atari-Adou and the Director-General of the Alaibe Campaign Organisation, Senator Inatimi Rufus-Spiff had alleged that there was an increased movement of arms and ammunition to the Peremabiri and Olugbobiri, Korokorosei and the Bush camps communities of Southern Ijaw, the Sagbama and Ekeremor areas of the state.

Comrade Atari-Adou said though they had reported the issue to the State Police Command, “we have asked the people of the state to be armed with video cameras and camera phones to record events at the polling centres to capture any violent acts of anyone or group during the poll on Saturday.”

But the state government through the Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Orientation, Mr. Nathan Egba in dismissing the allegation said: “this assurance has become necessary in view of the acts of violence which have recently re-surfaced in the state in the countdown to the general elections.”

“Government particularly recalls with sadness the violence that occurred in Ekeremor Local Government during the botched National Assembly poll and the recently detonated dynamite in an hotel in Yenagoa which were all obviously orchestrated by the opposition.

“Such acts only succeed in portraying the state as a violence prone environment whereas this is far from the truth. Some opposition politicians in the state, in their desperation to smear the image of well meaning individuals and organisations to score cheap political points, have tried to cast aspersions on the integrity of security establishment and the electoral body in the state.”
