Polls: Police warn Nigerians to leave voting vicinity after voting

The Police yesterday asked all eligible voters in today National Assembly elections, to ‘leave the immediate voting vicinity’ and allow their various party agents to take care of protecting and watching all votes cast until they are duly counted and recorded by INEC officials.

The Police vowed that they would not condone any act or conduct that is detrimental to the smooth conduct of the election as any trouble makers will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.

The warning came just as the Police announced the restriction of movement during Saturday April 9 election will remain in force till the end of the elections.

The Force public Relations Officer, DCP Olusola Amore, said, “For the purpose of compliance and enforcement, movement is hereby restricted from 10 pm of Friday April 8, 2011 to 6am of Saturday April, 9, 2011; while there will be restriction of movement of persons from 8am to 6pm on Saturday April 9, 2011 within the voting areas and centres”.

“The restriction order is to enable law enforcement agents monitor the activities of miscreants, thugs and other criminal elements who may intend to use the cover of darkness to interrupt the smooth conduct of the elections.

Meanwhile, persons on essential duties and INEC officials are exempted from this restriction order as they will be properly identified with their identity card.”

Continuing it said, “”The police will not condone any act or conduct that is detrimental to the smooth conduct of the election as any trouble makers will be arrested and dealt with according to the law”.

“The Nigeria Police is using this medium to assure all Nigerians that all law enforcement agents are working in collaboration to ensure violence free and fair elections”, it added.
