Rep calls for Jega’s removal

By Johnbosco Agbakwuru
The postponement of the April 2, 2011, National Assembly election by the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has continued to attract condemnation as a member of the House of Representatives, Mr Esien  Ayi, has called on the national lawmakers to commence the process of his removal for failing the nation.

The lawmaker also said that the National Assembly will probe how the commission spent the money released to it and the quality of materials that were imported for the exercise.

Ayi, who represents Calabar South/Akpabuyo/Bakassi Federal Constituency of Cross River State and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  candidate in the election, expressed  shock that the head of the nation’s electoral umpire could call for the postponement midway in the exercise without considering the huge sums of money contestants had invested in the elections.

He said, “the National Assembly should act fast and send these people packing. We have lost confidence in the ability of Jega to conduct credible elections in Nigeria.

“I am highly disappointed in INEC on the postponement of the National Assembly election in the country earlier scheduled to take place April 2, 2011.

“We had given INEC more than what was ever  given to any electoral body in the history of elections in this country. This is unacceptable,” he added.
