Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Dr. Anthony  Anuforom has said, the agency would help in increasing food production through the dissemination of meteorological information to farmers across the country.

Speaking to newsmen at the Conference Centre during the Agrimet-Metagri Training programme at the Agency Operational Headquarters in Oshodi Lagos, Dr. Anuforom noted that it was imperative that farmers were given the appropriate information about climate change as this would enable them to make good plans in producing enough foods for the teeming populations.

“This is a trained trainer workshop, it is not like a general workshop, so these people who are present right here will now go back and train other people by trying to organize this type of seminar at the grass root level, at the level of rural farmers by taking this information to them on how to make use of climate forecast for planning their farming activities” he stated.

According to him, he said “ of all the sectors of the economy, agriculture is the one sector that is related to weather and climate which is one essential part of our economy “

Dr. Anuforom further noted that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Spanish Agency for Meteorological Services were responsible for sponsoring the training programme in Nigeria.

“In West Africa, just like we have the DG in charge of NIMET, we have other MET directors from the sub region.
