AS the count down to the National Assembly election draws nearer, an All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, Delta South Senatorial District aspirant, Mr. Tosan Alfred Rewane, son of late business mogul and political associate of Late political sage, Pa. Obafemi Awolowo spoke to Vanguard on why he wants to go to the upper chamber and what he intends to achieve for the people of the Niger Delta region. He also spoke on the current travails of Chief James Ibori, why he defected from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Uduaghan administration amongst other important issues. Excerpts.

Why do you wish to go to the Senate?
I have always wished to contribute my own share to the development of this country and I thought that by going to the senate I will be able to make a more meaningful contribution because most of the people in the senate are more matured. And you know I am not getting younger and I will identify more with the senate.

Is there anything the incumbent Senator in Delta South has not done that you feel you are going to accomplish when you get there?

To be honest with you, I do not want to be arrogant but I have not seen the impact of the incumbent senator. The impact has been very minimal if at all and he has been there for two terms now. He want to go for a third term but I think somebody else should be given a chance to improve on what he has done so far.

Do have any specific project that you want to attract to this senatorial district?

You know Delta South has a huge natural resources and one of the areas I will like to invest in is foreign investment that. We can tap these natural resources like gas and crude oil. We have not done enough of that. We are sitting on these resources that are not properly exploited to the benefit of the people.

You are contesting under the platform of ANPP. What are the chances of your party in Delta State?
Well, I think the new politics now is not based on political parties. It is based on individuality and the individuals involved. I am very confident based on my track record and my political pedigree and I think people believe that I will do better representing them at that level when I get there.

You were a member of the PDP in Delta state, why did you defect to the ANPP?

I wanted to contest by all cost and I was not given that opportunity to contest under the PDP so I decided to look for other platforms that will give me the opportunity of becoming a Senator so that I can contribute my own share of knowledge to the development of the state and Country.

What is your assessment of the Uduaghan government?

Uduaghan tried his best and I cannot say he has not done anything within the short time he has been there. He has made certain impact but I believe there is room for improvement. Considering the availability of resources, and the allocation that Delta State gets when you compare it to other states that has similar allocation I do not think he has kept to our expectation but I think he should be given the opportunity to consolidate on what he has done so far.
