Lagos -The Nigerian Liquified Petroleum Gas Association (NLPGA), Thursday, urged the Federal Government to establish an agency to oversee the development and sustenance of the gas sector.
Alhaji Auwulu Ilu, president of the association, said in Lagos that a lack of well-articulated plan by the government had denied the sector the required attention.
Ilu urged the government to focus on Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector, make adequate policies and tangible investment to replace the use of kerosene and firewood for cooking.
He said the government should consider providing affordable and accessible energy sources for Nigerians.
“The number one challenge is a lack of appropriate government agency that is responsible for overseeing the growth of gas consumption.
“There is none, unlike between 2003 and 2007 when we have the presidential steering committee, which was responsible for making efforts to grow the LPG sector.
“Only those in the private sector are trying to boost the sector and you know the start-up capital for LPG is quite expensive.
“It is only government that can make steps that will yield tangible results in the sector,’’ Ilu said.
