Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia is expected to announce his squad for the March 27 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia today in Abuja.
The coach who has hinted that the squad will be dominated by the players who took on Sierra Leone in an international friendly in Lagos February 9 has reportedly picked Everton striker Victor Anichebe ahead of Obafemi Martins as a replacement for injured Turkey_based striker Emmanuel Emenike for the Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia.Birmingham City Carling Cup hero Martins had been pencilled to replace Emenike before the team the sudden change of mind which saw Siasia finally settling for Anichebe.
“The choice was between Martins and Anichebe to replace Emenike, who is injured. In the end, Anichebe got the nod,” a top team source told MTNFootball.com
Anichebe, who featured for Siasia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has returned to action after a long_term injury.
He received a late invitation for last month’s friendly against Sierra Leone in Lagos, but stayed away.
Siasia is expected to name his squad for the Ethiopia match today in Abuja. He may have only two goalkeepers, Vincent Enyeama and Dele Aiyenugba. By implication this could mean no goalkeeper would be picked from the Nigeria Premier League for the crucial Ethiopia clash.
However, several other NPL stars like Ekigho Ehiosun (Warri Wolves) and Osas Okoro, Chibuzor Okonkwo (Heartland) will be part of the Eagles latest squad.
