Enyeama, Nkwocha reign!

By Tony Ubani, P.H.
Nigeria’s first choice goal keeper, Vincent Enyeama was Tuesday declared Nigeria’s best player for the 2010 football season after clinching the prestigious AIT Football Award at a ceremony organised inside the Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt.

Nigeria’s first choice goal keeper, Vincent Enyeama

From a humble beginning in Nigeria, Vincent Enyeama has grown into a world class goalkeeper. He was in the national team to the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup and maned the goal against England
in a goalless draw.

He was the country’s best player at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa where his heroics ensured the largely fumbling Super Eagles were not disgraced despite their poor showing. Against two-time world champions, Argentina Enyeam almost stopped everything that came his way.

Argentina won that match 1-0 but could have scored more. The hardworking goalkeeper won two consecutive man-of-the-match awards from FIFA in South Africa, a rare achievement for a goalkeeper in a World Cup.

Apart from the World Cup, the Nigeria goalkeeper maintained his form for top Israeli Premier League club Hapoel Tel Aviv. He takes their penalties. Perpetua Nkwocha won the female footballer of the year.
