Bauchi – Following the indefinite strike embarked upon by medical doctors in Bauchi State fory days ago, , the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has sought the help of the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Muhammadu Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, over detention of their colleague by security operatives in Jos, Plateau state.
Chairman of the Association, Dr Abdullahi Ibrahim, made the plea yesterday when he led members of the Association to the palace of the Emir of Bauchi to seek for his fatherly intervention to enable security operatives release their colleague unconditionally and apologize to him for the unlawful detention.
Dr Ibrahim told the Emir that since Bauchi had a common border with state where crisis and conflicts occur frequently, the lives of the doctor were now in danger, “we cannot be able to perform our duties, especially if crisis occur and injured people were brought to our hospitals for fear of being harassed and arrested by security operatives.”
He also said they had already embarked on a strike to protest the illegal detention of their colleague, Dr Adamu Sambo, who was arrested by soldiers last Friday after he tried to save the life of a patience with gun shots in Boto General Hospital.
He expressed fears that since Dr. Sambo’s arrest, his whereabout was unknown, especially against the backdrop of reports that he was with the State security Service in Plateau State.
The chairman said they were not against investigation of their colleague by security operatives, but stressed that his fundamental human right was infringed upon, having been detained for more than 48 hours.
Dr Ibrahim said: “Whatever happened to patients in our hospitals, security operatives should be held responsible because at the end of our congress meeting yesterday, all members of the association asked us to continue with the strike until our demands are met.
“We had already informed the Bauchi State government.”
