Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, the Commissioner of Police in the state, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the officers, Inspector Santal Ali, 43, and an unidentified Constable were shot dead in Gomari and Pompomari wards.

He said : “We received a distress call from Gomari/Bulunkutu divisional police headquarters that three suspected Boko Haram gunmen in an unmarked Golf Volkswagen vehicle, shot and
killed Ali at his Pompomari ward residence.

“The officer was shot in the chest and thigh before he gave up the ghost in the presence of his three wives and nine children.

“Ali exhibited gallantry by wrestling down one of the suspects, before he was shot and killed by the attackers.”

An eyewitness who was with Ali at the residence said: “We just completed our evening prayers when three people came to us and asked for the police officer.

“When Ali stood up, one of the suspects in a flowing gown pulled out a Kalashnikov rifle and shot him in the chest and thigh.”
